Varga Gets National Honor
Yale RB Runs For 220 Yards, 3 TDs
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale sophomore Tyler Varga (Kitchener, Ont.) earned National Running Back of the Week honors from College Football Performance Awards after gaining 220 yards on 25 carries in last Saturday's game at Columbia.
Varga, a first-year U.S. collegian, got his first start at quarterback, having lined up as a tailback the first six weeks of the season. The Bulldogs had lost three signal-callers in a win over Penn the previous week, and the Yale newcomer was moved into the role.
He answered the call with three scoring runs and nearly put the game on ice for the Blue, which fell 26-22 to the Lions.
Varga leads the Ivy League with 122 rushing yards per game and 208 all-purpose. He has rushed for over 100 yards in four of his six games, while he is the only Ivy player to rush for more than 200 in a game this season. His 220 at Columbia are sixth best for a Bulldog player.
He was the first newcomer to run for triple digits in his Yale debut since Mike McLeod in 2005. Varga, who played at the University of Western Ontario in 2011.
The Bulldogs are at Brown this Saturday at 12:30 in a game that airs live on YES Network.
