10 Bulldogs Earn All-Ivy

Randall A First-Team Pick

PRINCETON, N.J. – Ten members of the 2013 Yale Football Team were named to the All-Ivy League squad, highlighted by first-team pick Deon Randall (San Diego, Calif.).

The Bulldogs had four second-team selections and five honorable mentions after finishing 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Ancient Eight. Four of the 10 Elis had previous All-Ivy recognition. There were five on offense, four on defense and one special teams player.

Randall, named Yale's 2013 MVP and 2014 captain last night at the team banquet, was a unanimous first-team selection after catching 85 passes and scoring 11 touchdowns between rushing and receiving. He was an All-Ivy pick in 2011 but sat out last fall with an injury.

The junior wide receiver made an enormous impact this fall by taking handoffs, catching passes, running back kicks and playing some at defensive back. He earned numerous accolades after scoring four TDs and catching 11 passes in a win over Cornell.

The second-team choices were senior Wes Gavin (OL, San Diego, Calif.), junior Ben Carbery (OL, Oak Park, Ill.), sophomore Cole Champion (DB, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Foyesade Oluokun (DB, St. Louis, Mo.).

Gavin, an All-Ivy pick last year, and Carbery helped the Bulldogs average 26 points and 403 yards.

Champion, who led the Blue with three interceptions and four fumble recoveries, shared the team lead with 49 solo tackles while he was second with 78 overall. He earned the New England Sports Writer's Gold Helmet Award and Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for his big (two interceptions) day at Cal Poly.

Oluokun was third in tackles, including a career-best 12-1-13 against Brown, while breaking up four passes. He earned Ivy League Defensive and Rookie of the Week honors for that performance against the Bears.

Seniors Beau Palin (DE, Oconomowoc, Wis.) and John Oppenheimer (OL, Menlo Park, Calif.) and juniors Tyler Varga (TB, Kitchener, Ont.), William Vaughan (LB, South Orange, NJ) and Kyle Cazzetta (P/PK, Slate Hill, NY) were honorable mention All-Ivy.

Palin, the 2013 captain, had 46 tackles while leading the Elis to impressive wins over Cal-Poly, Colgate and Brown.

Oppenheimer, an academic all-district pick, was the leader of the offense at center. He was a three-year starter earning his second All-Ivy selection.

Vaughan led the Elis with 82 overall tackles and six for lost yardage playing all 10 games.

Varga averaged 104 yards over six games including a 236-yard effort at Colgate in the season opener.

Yale's starting punter and placekicker, Cazzetta connected on 11 of 15 field goals and had a 38.7 average on punts with 14 landing inside the 20.
