Yale University has announced that Jerome (Jerry) P. Kenney '63, a former Yale football player, has bestowed a gift that will restore the original Yale Bowl Field Center and add additional facilities.
Kenney, one of four brothers to compete for the Bulldogs at Yale Bowl, will not only help restore the field center at the base of the press box at the historic stadium, the new Kenney Family Field Center would create additional space above to host special events and other functions.
"We were encouraged both by the University's decision to restore and modernize the Yale Bowl, which has been such an integral part of Yale's tradition, and also by the widespread support this initiative is receiving from other former players and alumni," said Kenney. "My three brothers and I collectively played football for 14 consecutive years for Yale and we've had a next generation player as well, so it has been an important part of our family's Yale experience. Since Yale has contributed so much to our lives and careers, we're pleased to be able to fund this center as part of the restoration project."
Renovation of the facility currently known as the halftime room is part of the entire Yale Bowl renovation plan, and the timing of the work has yet to be determined. The base of the center will accommodate the entire Yale football team and game officials during pre-game and halftime meetings. The upper floor would include photos and information on the storied history of Yale football.
No family has been better represented on Yale football rosters than the Kenneys; they are the only family to have five Bulldogs on the gridiron and the only four-brother football combination in Yale history. Jerry's brothers, Brian R. '60, Robert D. '67 and Richard L. '71, all wore the blue and white, while Robert's son, Jeffrey S. '93, also played football at Yale.
"The Kenney family has a long, unique and distinguished affiliation with Yale football. This is an exceptional leadership gift which will add tremendously to the restoration of the Yale Bowl," said Yale Athletics Director Tom Beckett. "We are so very grateful for their belief in and support of Yale Athletics. The `family' in Kenney Family Field Center is most appropriate in the naming of this facility. This family's impact on Yale football is unprecedented with five men competing at the Bowl. We are very excited about the Kenney's generous gift and what it means for the Yale football program and the historic Bowl."
