McCarthy Ties for Second
OWINGS MILL, Md. – The Bulldogs hosted their second tournament of the spring, but could not find the same magic in Maryland that led them to victory when they hosted their Spring Opener two weeks ago. Yale struggled all weekend with the tough conditions and, ultimately, finished in a tie for fifth behind Penn, Princeton, Harvard and George Washington. Penn took home the title and looks to be the favorite heading into next weekend's Ivy League Championships.
“The conditions were really tough,” said senior captain Ben Wescoe. “It was very windy and the greens were extremely fast, which led to high scores. We didn't handle the wind very well and really struggled with our ball striking. Once we got onto the greens, we continued to struggle with our putting.”
Everyone seemed to struggle on Saturday. The Bulldogs were actually in second just one shot back of Penn, but the Quakers managed to master the conditions and drop from 312 to 299 on Sunday, while the Bulldogs only went from 313 to 312. Yale (625) ultimately finished 13 shots back of Penn (612).
One Yale golfer did seem to manage to conquer the elements. Junior Thomas McCarthy tied for second place in the tournament with rounds of 75 and 73. He finished just one stroke behind Chance Pipitone of Penn.
“I was able to avoid making a big number,” said McCarthy. “I managed my mistakes well enough to keep a decent round together, and when I needed it most, I was able to come up with a big shot or sink a big putt.”
Freshman Brad Kushner also played well for the Bulldogs finishing just seven strokes back of McCarthy. He shot rounds of 76 and 79. The rest of the Bulldogs were struggled to break 80 for the weekend. Wescoe went 81 and 80; freshman Carson Weinand shot rounds of 82 and 80 and junior Brandon Marick finished at 81 and 84.
“Penn is definitely the team to beat now,” said Wescoe. “The Ivy League Championships are going to be very competitive and any team is capable of getting hot and winning.”
McCarthy echoed Wescoe's sentiments and added that it will come down to who wants it most.
“I'm still confident that if we play well, we have a good shot,” said McCarthy. “There are a lot of good teams and it will come down to who wants it most. Hopefully, we will use this week to fuel us. We just need to focus on our short game and really concentrate on hitting clutch shots to keep rounds from getting out of hand.”
The Ivy League Championships will begin Apr. 23.
