Bulldogs Head to Galloway National for Ivy League Championships
Look to Repeat Last Year's Victory
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – When the Yale men's golf team hits the links at the Galloway National Golf Course in Galloway, N.J., for the Apr. 27-29 Ivy League Championships, it will look to build on recent momentum in a bid to repeat last year's victory at the tournament.
"We are excited to return to Galloway National for our conference championship," said head coach Colin Sheehan '97. "The entire season, which began last September, has been about working towards this one tournament and I believe the team is poised to play well at this critical moment."
At last year's Ivy League Championship — also at Galloway National — the Elis took home the trophy by a vast 20 strokes to earn an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA National Championship field. Last year's result showcased the golfing abilities of Yale's players: for their efforts, sophomore Sam Bernstein was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year while senior captain Jeffrey Hatten and junior Bradley Kushner made the first-team All-Ivy.
The Bulldogs will look to repeat such a feat at this year's tournament. They are not without momentum, coming into the Ivy League Championship with victories at the Princeton Invitational and Macdonald Cup under their belt, as well as several other top-five finishes throughout the season.
Still, the Elis will face some tough competition from the other teams in the competition – Ancient Eight rivals Harvard, Princeton and Dartmouth all managed to beat out the Elis as last weekend's Century Intercollegiate.
Players will have to contend with the tough course at Galloway National, which was crafted by Tom Fazio and features marked contour changes, pine forest, sand and water. Its website says "breathtaking views, inviting fairways, challenging hazards and beautifully situated greens" are the reward for players willing to play it through.
Players will tee-off for the first round of the tournament on Friday morning.
