Yale Looks to Make it Four in a Row

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — When the Yale men's golf team competes this weekend, it will look to win its fourth Princeton Invitational title in a row.

The Apr. 13-14 Princeton Invitational, held at the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J., comes on the heels of a second-place finish at home at the Apr. 6 Yale Spring Opener. That result followed from a powerful second round performance that brought the Elis to within nine strokes of the tournament winner Villanova.

Looking to build on that momentum, the Bulldogs will seek to defend their Princeton Invitational title. Last year they won in a nail-biting finish, one stroke clear of Georgetown, who finished in second.

"As always, we are very excited about traveling to New Jersey for the Princeton Invitational," said head coach Colin Sheehan '97. "It is a very well organized event with a strong field on a course where we've had considerable success."

Near the helm of the leaderboard last year was Jeffrey Hatten '12, who captained the team that season and tied for second at the Princeton Invitational. Not far behind him was sophomore William Davenport, who finished in a tie for 14th and will look to build on that result this year.

Junior Sam Bernstein and senior captain Bradley Kushner, both of whom finished in a tie for 24th last year, are also poised to perform well this weekend. In 2011, Bernstein took home the individual championship as the Elis secured victory in that year's Princeton Invitational.

This year's tournament will feature a 14-team field including all seven other Ivy League teams. Golfers will play through 54 holes: 36 on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. The par-71 Springdale course measures 6,390 yards.

"The players have done a very good job navigating the underrated difficulty of the course, particularly the old-fashioned, canted greens," Sheehan said.

Players will tee off starting at 7:45 a.m. Saturday.
