DALY CITY, Calif.—Rising sophomore Jonathan Lai of the Yale men's golf team will compete in the June 2 U.S. Open California Sectional Qualifier, which will be played over 36 holes at the Lake Merced Golf Club and the Ocean Course at The Olympic Club.
Lai will compete in a field of 110 golfers vying for one of five spots in the U.S. Open. The field includes several PGA Tour winners and European Tour winners.
"While the competition in these sectional qualifiers is extremely stacked, Jon is more than capable of getting hot and putting himself in contention," said head coach Colin Sheehan '97. "I expect him to play fast and loose and have fun playing these two historic courses against the strongest field he's ever seen."
Lake Merced has hosted two USGA championships, while The Olympic Club's Lake Course has been the site of five U.S. Opens.
Lai enters the tournament after completing a freshman season in which he averaged 74 with a low round of 66. He tied for third at The Doc Gimmler, in his first collegiate tournament appearance, and tied for ninth at the Yale Spring Invitational.
Lai will tee off at 8:28 a.m. Pacific Time on the first hole at Olympic. Scoring is available here.
