Freshman Goalie Gets Conference Honor
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Nick Maricic, a freshman goalie for the Yale men's hockey team, was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after helping the Bulldogs tie No. 7 Wisconsin in last night's Badger Hockey Showdown Championship Game.
Maricic, an Alta Loma, Calif., native who played for the USHL Tri-City (Nebraska) Storm, made 20 saves in the 2-2 overtime tie against the Badgers. He stopped five of six UW man-advantages, including a 5-on-3, and held the nation's No. 2 scoring team to a pair of tallies before a large crowd on an emotional night for folks at the Kohl Center. The host Badgers took the tournament title by winning the shootout (2-1) in the last scheduled Badger Hockey Showdown.
The Yale rookie owns a 2.41 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and a 3-1-2 record sharing time with three other Bulldog netminders. His conference honor is Yale's first ECAC rookie award this winter.
The 8-3-3 Bulldogs, No. 6 in today's USA Today/American Hockey Magazine rankings, are off until Sunday's 4 p.m. game at Dartmouth.
