  • Class of 2017 Announced

    The Yale men’s hockey program has restocked its shelves after graduating six seniors who helped the Bulldogs win the 2012-13 national championship. Eight new locker plates have been made for the Class of 2017, which includes five forwards, two goalies and a defenseman.

    The two Ancient rivals skated against each other 237 times in games contested at eight different cities. The first meeting of 2014, which brings the Yale and Harvard men’s hockey teams back to the city of the first game in 1900, should have the most fans to ever see the historic rivalry. That’s because it’s being billed as “The Rivalry On Ice” and the non-league contest, which airs live on NBC Sports Network, will be played at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 11.

    The national championship celebration continued today with a salute to the Class of 2013. Almost 300 people celebrated the Frozen Four title and the six senior leaders at the 2012-13 Yale Men’s Hockey Team Banquet at the Yale Commons presented by the Yale Hockey Association.

    Jesse Root led his team with three goals in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, now he is the elected leader of the 2013-14 Yale men’s hockey team. Root was named captain after a team vote on Wednesday afternoon at the Ray Tompkins House.

    “His passion for the game as a student and a teacher was intoxicating. You couldn’t be a hockey player and not take something positive from his study and enthusiasm for the game,” said former Yale, Olympic and NHL star Bob Brooke ’83 reflecting on his college coach, Tim Taylor, who passed away last weekend at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer.

    The last of the hockey season awards was announced today, and it was only appropriate that the leader of the national championship team should receive the national honor. Yale senior Andrew Miller, who led the Bulldogs to their first Frozen Four title, has been named the Hockey Commissioners’ Association National Division I Player of the Month for March/April.

    Andrew Miller and Jeff Malcolm, who spearheaded Yale’s national championship run, picked up additional honors today as they were named ECAC Hockey player and goalie of the month. The two seniors, fresh off the Frozen Four Title at Pittsburgh, put together some impressive statistics during March and early April to grab the final conference awards of the 2012-13 season.

    Antoine Laganiere, the senior Yale hockey forward who helped the Bulldogs win a 2013 national championship last weekend, has agreed to terms as a free-agent with the Anaheim Ducks. It’s a two-year, entry-level contract.

    When Yale head coach Keith Allain '80 addressed the media at the 2009 NCAA East Regional, he spoke of his team's goal of winning a national championship. At that point, the Bulldogs had only been to the NCAA Tournament twice since 1952, so it's safe to say that not many in attendance that day took Allain's comment seriously.

  • Student Tickets For NCAA Championship Game Available At Ticket Office At Ray Tompkins House

    Yale Athletics has been able to arrange for an additional block of student tickets to Saturday’s NCAA men’s hockey championship game. Single student tickets can be purchased today at a special rate of $50 on a first-come, first-served basis at the Yale Athletics Ticket Office at Ray Tompkins House. You must present your Yale ID to purchase your ticket. The President’s Office and the Yale College Dean’s Office will provide round-trip bus transportation free of charge to students who purchase tickets. Buses will depart New Haven early on Saturday and return after the game; details will be provided to ticket holders.

    The American Hockey Coaches Association announced the 2012-13 CCM Hockey All-Americans today at the Frozen Four and Yale senior forward Andrew Miller was a second-team East selection. Miller and his teammates play for a national title against Quinnipiac tomorrow night at the Consol Energy Center.

    The Yale men's hockey team, coming off wins over a pair of national powers at the West Regional, takes on an Eastern powerhouse in its first national semifinal contest in 61 years. The Bulldogs (20-12-3) and UMass Lowell (28-10-2) meet at 4:30 p.m. on April 11 in the first game of the 2013 Frozen Four at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The contest airs live on ESPN2 and on AM-1340 (WYBC).

Today, the current candidate for the top prize in college hockey, Eric Hartzell, stopped all 30 shots and three different teammates scored as No. 1/2 Quinnipiac defeated No. 10/11 Yale 3-0 in the third-place contest of the 2013 ECAC Championship at Boardwalk Hall.
