Yale To Face Gophers Friday
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's hockey team will compete in its fourth NCAA Hockey Tournament in the last five years this week at the West Regional. The Bulldogs found out tonight they had made the 2013 tournament by watching the selection show broadcast on ESPNU. The Elis (18-12-3) are the No. 4 seed in the West Regional and face top seed University of Minnesota (26-8-5) at 2 p.m. EDT on Friday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. The regional semifinal airs live on ESPNU.
The other Friday matchup in the West Regional pits No. 2 North Dakota (21-12-7) against No. 3 Niagara (23-9-5) at 5:30 E.S.T. at Van Andel Arena, the home of the American Hockey League Grand Rapids Griffins and the site of the 2009 NCAA West Regional.
Yale went to three straight national tournaments from 2009 to 2011. The Elis, under Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach, came within a game of the Frozen Four twice (2010, 2011), losing to the eventual national champion (Boston College, Minnesota-Duluth) both times.
The Blue, coming off a loss to overall NCAA Tournament top seed Quinnipiac at Atlantic City in the ECAC Championship consolation game, is 2-2 this post season with a pair of wins over St. Lawrence at New Haven in the conference quarterfinals.
The Gophers and Bulldogs have met 18 times since the first contest at Minneapolis in 1934. Yale won the first two games but Minnesota has taken the last six, including the most recent clash at the 1994 Mariucci Classic, and leads the series 12-6.
"I am really happy for the guys," said Allain, in his seventh-year at Yale. "They have worked extremely hard for this opportunity and we are looking forward to the challenge."
Two-day passes for the West Regional are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or by visiting Ticketmaster.com.
