Blue Comes From Behind to Earn Tie

HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 14 Yale men's hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit in the second period to get its third point of the weekend with a 3-3 overtime tie against Dartmouth. The result keeps the Elis, who beat Harvard on Friday, in fifth place, two points out of fourth in the race for the final conference playoff bye with one weekend left.

The Bulldogs (14-8-5, 9-7-4 ECAC) got goals from Jesse Root, Cody Learned and Mike Doherty while Alex Lyon made 24 saves before 4,267 at Thompson Arena.

The Blue, on a 3-game unbeaten streak, had a 13-8 edge in first-period shots but was down 1-0 at intermission. Lyon and the penalty-kill unit had to work through two advantages to keep it a one-goal game.

The Dartmouth lead stretched to two early in the second, but the visitors used a 51-second span to strike back with a pair of even-strength goals to make it 2-2.

A broken Big Green stick in their end created a mini Yale advantage for as long as the Blue could keep the puck in the zone. There were two scrums along the blueline at the boards to keep it in. Root pulled it at of the last one and passed to John Hayden before crashing the net. Hayden carried behind the goal and then sent it along the boards to Kenny Agostino. The senior forward immediately wheeled and sent it in front for Root who one-timed it home at 4:38 for his third tally of the weekend and 12th of the year.

If the home bench had been where the visiting bench is, the Green would have had just four sticks on the ice for a moment before someone could skate over to grab another. The puck was in front of the Yale bench for two of those scrums for what seemed like a long time.

Learned created the opportunity and scored the goal that evened it. The sophomore forward won a battle with two Dartmouth skaters to clear the puck out of the Yale end. He then won the race down the ice with one defender draped all over him. Learned held to the right circle and then sent a rising wrister top shelf and inside the near post for his fifth of the season.

Midway through the third the Elis made it three straight scores when Doherty fired a shot from the slot after a battle for the puck between the circles. Stu Wilson was fighting a few defenders for possession and got a stick on it before Doherty swooped in, controlled for a moment and then wristed it past Charles Grant at 10:00.

The Elis did a good job of clearing the puck out of their defensive zone for the next eight minutes while creating some decent scoring chances. The Big Green continued to fight to set up something on offense and get shots to the net. They broke through with 1:36 left on a one-timer from the point that found its way to the net through traffic and send the game to OT.

That Dartmouth goal was one of just six shots it got on net in the third. Yale had 10 on the way to a 42-27 advantage for the game, including 5-1 in the extra session.

Agostino and Hayden both had quality opportunities in the OT, but both shots hit the goalie.

Jesse Root finished the weekend with three goals and four points. He was the only Bulldog with multiple goals this weekend and now leads the team with 18 assists and 30 points… Kenny Agostino has a team-high 13 goals... The Bulldogs host Union and RPI next weekend in the last regular season games of 2013-14. Tickets are still available for both games… Yale went with the same lineup as last night at Harvard.
