Seven Players Named All-New England
Shay Coach of Year, Matt Gibson Player
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Seven Yale men's lacrosse players were named to the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-Star Team, including the player of the year, Matt Gibson, while Andy Shay was voted coach of the year.
The Bulldogs, who finished 10-4 and No. 1 in New England, had two first-teamers in Gibson, a sophomore attackman, and classmate midfielder Gregory Mahony. Gibson led the team with 44 points and was second in goals (26). Mahony, who led the Blue with three goals in the Ivy Semifinal loss to Princeton last weekend, hit the net 21 times this spring.
The five second-team selections included captain Brendan Gibson (A), Matt Fuchs (A) and Matt Miller (A), Michael McCormack (M) and Nick Tsouris (M). Brendan Gibson (18-17-35) had an excellent senior season, while fellow fourth-year man Fuchs enjoyed a career-best 14-10-24. Tsouris, a classmate, was considered one of the top short stick defensive middies in the nation. Miller (12-6-18), a sophomore, and McCormack (50 gb), who helped lead the Yale defense with three other freshmen, gave the Bulldogs the most All-New England picks in recent years.
Shay, who just finished his seventh season at Yale, earned his first coaching honor as a head coach with the Elis' best season since 1992.
