Coleman Named Captain for 2011

Midfielder to Lead Elis

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Patrick Coleman, a junior long-stick midfielder, has been voted captain of the 2011 Yale men's lacrosse team.

Coleman, who played in all 14 games this season, was second on the team in ground balls with 48 while helping the Bulldogs finish 10-4 and share the Ivy League Championship.The 6-2, 175-pound Eli was a key part of his team reaching its first post-season game since 1992.

In 2009 he had 36 pickups in 13 games after snatching 27 in 14 games as a rookie. Coleman has two career goals, one as a freshman and one this past season.

“It is a huge honor and privilege to be elected captain,” said Coleman, a Ridgewood, N.J., native. “Brendan Gibson set a very high precedent and I will try to follow the great job he did. Our team has tremendous leadership within itself, starting with a great class of leaders surrounding me. This season was a success in that we made the Ivy Tournament, but we are looking to use the momentum to have an even better year next year.”

A four-time varsity lacrosse letterman at Delbarton School, he was honorable mention all-conference his senior year. With Coleman, his teams were three-time conference champions, two-time state champions and took a pair of county titles.

“Pat is a great player who has blossomed into a great leader. He fully understands the job in front of him. He has had a great example set for him by Brendan Gibson, and I know he's ready to take the baton,” said Yale head coach Andy Shay.

Coleman, a resident of Jonathan Edwards College, majors in economics.
