Fall Ball Ends With Memorial Tourney
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's lacrosse team hosts the 4th annual Christian Prince Memorial Tournament on Oct. 17 at both Reese Stadium and Johnson Field. The Bulldogs will be joined by Rutgers, St. Johns, Marist, Sacred Heart and Lafayette.
Christian Prince, a former varsity lacrosse player and part of four generations of the Prince family to attend Yale, was killed on Feb. 17, 1991. Prince was raised in Chevy Chase, Md., and attended high school at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, where he was the captain of the football and lacrosse teams. The tournament was renamed in 2007 to honor Prince's memory.
Admission to the tournament is free, but a donation of five dollars for parking to benefit the Christian Prince Scholarship Fund will be collected.
The Bulldogs play Rutgers at 11 am and Lafayette at 3 pm in the newly renovated Reese Stadium. Games will be four 20-minute running quarters.
The Yale team votes for one player to wear the No. 27 jersey at
the tournament, which was last worn by Prince. The previous three
players honored with the number were Alfonsa Costa, Matt Aronson
and Davis Lindsey.
"We feel it's important to keep Christian's memory alive and think that the best way to honor him is to have a player, who exemplifies Christian's character, wear his number during the tournament," Bulldogs' head coach Andy Shay said.
Yale, led by returning scoring leader Matt Gibson, brings back the majority of a squad that captured a share of the 2010 Ivy League Championship. The Bulldogs will be looking to build on the success of last season and return to NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992.
