All-Ivy Midfielder Helped Elis To Championships
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs, fresh off a national championship, have a new captain. John Daniggelis '19 will lead the 2019 Yale Men's Lacrosse team in defending both the NCAA and Ivy League crowns.
Daniggelis, an honorable mention All-Ivy League midfielder in 2018, started every game and played a crucial role in the Elis' 17-3 season and perfect league slate.
"It was a tremendous honor being named captain. It was very humbling because it showed that my teammates have faith in me to lead them," said Daniggelis, who was a two-year captain at Smithtown East High School in lacrosse and football. "By no means will this be a one-man job. I believe that everyone in our class is capable of leading this team."
Daniggelis scored a pair of important goals in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals against Loyola at Hempstead, N.Y. Those tallies helped push the Bulldogs into Championship Weekend at Gillette Stadium.
The Saint James, N.Y., native finished among the team's top 10 in goals (15), assists and points (21) this spring.
Yale Head Coach Andy Shay is excited for Daniggelis to take over this new role.
"We have had a long line of strong leaders, and John will take what they have done and make it his own," said Shay. "The team and John obviously have big shoes to fill next year, but I know they are up to the task."
Daniggelis, whose sister, Nicole '16, was a star on the Yale women's lacrosse team, is aware of the new expectations, but he is confident his team will carry over their success from last season.
"I believe that our class will be able to lead the Yale Lacrosse Team of 2019 to reach the new expectations that have been set for us," said Daniggelis. "The standard has been set, now it's our job to maintain that standard."
