NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Thomas McNamara's goal with 8:39 left in the second half snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Brown to a 2-1 victory over Yale before a big crowd on a chilly night at Reese Stadium. Freshman Scott Armbrust scored for the Bulldogs.

"This game mirrored our other Ivy games this season," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "It was very competitive and we more than held our own. We were able to find a goal, but we're not quite experienced enough to make it stick."

All four of the Bulldogs' Ivy losses have come by one goal, including two in overtime.

Yale (5-8-3, 2-4 Ivy) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:12 when Armbrust was left all alone in front and knocked in an Andy Shorten cross from point-blank range.

The Bears, who have been nationally ranked for much of the season, tied it midway through the first half with a beautiful goal. T.J. Popolizio dove to head in a David Walls' header at 22:52.

Brad Rose nearly gave the Bulldogs the lead early in the second half, but his header clanked off the crossbar.

"Both teams fought tooth and nail," Tompkins said. "We weren't able to create enough opportunities to get that critical second goal."

Brown (9-2-5, 4-2 Ivy) tallied the game-winner at 81:21. It came when a loose ball found its way to McNamara in the box, and he drilled it home.

Travis Chulick made one save in goal for the Bulldogs. Bears' goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand also stopped one shot.

Brown outshot Yale 10-3 and also had a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

Seniors Jon Carlos, Travis Chulick, Jordan Raybould, Kevin Pope and Justin Song, who were playing their final game at Reese Stadium, were honored prior to kickoff.

"It's always hard to lose good players, but it's especially hard when they are such good people," Tompkins said. "They've been tremendous servants to the program."

Yale closes out the season next Friday at Princeton. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
