Yale Goalkeeper Shines On Field, In Classroom

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Goalkeeper Bobby Thalman has played virtually every minute of every game for the Bulldogs since 2010. He's been just as reliable in the classroom and the community, and on Tuesday he was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes from around the nation who excel both on and off the field selected as candidates for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student –athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Thalman, a political science major, has volunteered with Soccer Without Borders in his native Colorado, working mainly with Somali and Burmese children, coaching them and providing education advice. In addition, he is part of the Yale Soccer outreach program, which mentors underprivileged New Haven area children. In 2009, he travelled to Peru on a community service trip to aid in the construction of schools.

Thalman, the Yale captain, has started all six games this fall and leads the Ivy League with 35 saves. Last fall as a junior, he earned second team All-Ivy recognition after leading the league in save percentage (.852) and saves (92). In 39 career starts, Thalman has posted eight shutouts.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the NCAA College Cup in early December in Hoover, Ala.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
