Bulldogs Fall 2-0 At Colgate
Sept. 12, 2008
HANOVER, N.H. - Steven Miller and Jeff Leach each scored to lead Colgate to a 2-0 victory over Yale in the first game of the Dartmouth Classic at Burnham Field. Travis Chulick started in goal for the Bulldogs and finished with five saves.
The Red Raiders, the defending Patriot League champions, nearly grabbed the lead in the fifth minute but Yale's Eric Meyer headed away a Miller shot. Miller, though, wouldn't be denied in the 23rd minute. After an Alex Weekes' shot pulled Chulick out of the goal, Miller followed with a shot into the corner.
The Red Raiders (3-0-2) added an insurance goal early in the second half when Leach fired a hard shot from 30 yards out into the far corner.
Yale (1-1) had a couple of chances to get on the board in the remaining minutes, but Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio, the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, made saves on shots by Brad Rose, Jordan Raybould and Liam Leonard.
"It was a good, competitive game," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "The difference was Colgate's experience showed at key moments in the game. We played some good soccer at times but were also inconsistent at times. I thought we improved as the game went along and showed some promising signs."
The Red Raiders had an 11-5 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Yale plays Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at noon on the second day of the Dartmouth Classic.
