NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Speed played a key role in Yale's 4-1 victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday night. On two occasions, Jon Carlos outran Seawolves defenders and both times the result was a goal. Kevin Pope and Eric Meyer also scored as the Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak on a gorgeous night at Reese Stadium.

"I was looking for a positive response after the weekend," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins, who had watched his team drop a pair of games at the Dartmouth Classic. "I was really pleased with how our guys took control of the game right from the beginning."

The Bulldogs (2-2) scored three times in the first half and outshot the Seawolves 15-9.

"Stony Brook got back into it in the second half, but I thought we managed it well," Tompkins said.

Carlos's first goal at 9:01 gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Liam Leonard sent a long ball forward, Carlos then outraced a defender and slipped a shot past Stony Brook goalkeeper Dawid Ditrich.

Yale took advantage of a free kick to score again at 15:24. From his own side of the field, Guzinski sent a long ball into the box, and Pope was able to bang it in. The third goal also came on a free kick, although this one was a bit more conventional. With less than 30 seconds left in the half, the Seawolves were whistled for a foul. Meyer took the kick from nearly 20 yards out and fired it into the right corner with just 13 seconds remaining.

Carlos's second goal early in the second half was nearly identical to his first one. Leonard sent a long pass forward, Carlos outran the defenders and drilled a shot into the lower right corner.

Oscar Leis scored for Stony Brook (2-4-1) less than a minute later, but the Seawolves didn't threaten much the rest of the way.

Travis Chulick made three saves in goal to earn the victory for Yale.

The Bulldogs return to Reese Stadium on Saturday night and host Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
