The Bulldogs got goals from Jake Miller and Alex Munns, but it was not enough to overcome No. 15 Southern Methodist University, as the Elis fell 5-2 to the Mustangs in Tulsa, Okla. SMU improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-5.
The Mustangs earned the first goal of the game just over 14 minutes into play when Jake Jackson converted an Alex Smith assist. The Bulldogs tied the game with less than three minutes to play before halftime, with Shannon Brooks taking a corner kick that was headed by Jake Miller past SMU goaltender TJ Tomasso.
The Elis were unable to preserve the tie going into halftime, allowing Duke Hashimoto to score his first of three goals with just 20 seconds remaining in the half. The goal set off a run of four unanswered goals by SMU, the last coming at 69:25 when Hashimoto scored on a rebound to earn his hat trick.
With just under three minutes remaining in the game, the Elis scored their second goal of the night when captain Ryan Raybould and Andrew Dealy set up Alex Munns off a free kick. The score changed the final tally to 5-2 in favor of SMU.
The Bulldogs were outshot 20-15 by the Golden Hurricanes. Yale goaltender Matt Aleksinas stopped two SMU shots, while TJ Tomasso got behind five Bulldog attempts.
Yale will remain in Tulsa to play University of Tulsa on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
