NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Thorsteinn Gestsson scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute as Columbia edged Yale 1-0 at the Soccer-Lacrosse stadium. Dean Arnaoutakis and Alex Maffeo combined to make eight saves to post the shutout in goal for the Lions. Dwayne Whylly made five saves in goal for the Bulldogs, who saw their four game winning streak come to an end.
The winning goal came when Gestsson deflected in an Einar Benediktsson shot off a rebound just 3:18 into the game. The Lions (3-10-2, 1-4 Ivy) had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting Yale 8-5. The Bulldogs, though, picked it up in the second half. Yale's best scoring chances came with 25 minutes left in the second half. Alex Maffeo stopped an Alex Munns' blast. The rebound came right to Lindsey Williams, but Maffeo was able to save Williams' shot as well.
"We improved in the second half, but the early goal proved to be too much to overcome," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "Their goalkeepers made a couple of big saves."
The Lions outshot Yale 12-10 for the game.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play.
Yale returns to action next Friday at Brown at 7 p.m.
