Bulldogs Seeks Second Straight Win Saturday Against Sacred Heart

Sept. 19, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - One of Yale coach Brian Tompkins's biggest concerns heading into the 2008 season was his team's ability to score goals. So far in games played at home, that hasn't been a problem. The Bulldogs have outscored their first two opponents 6-1 in the friendly confines of Reese Stadium. They hope that trend continues when Sacred Heart comes to town on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Fans can follow live stats of the game on GameTracker.

Last year, on the second day of the Yale Classic, the Pioneers picked up their first victory over the Bulldogs when Ricarti Mendes scored the only goal of the game at 23:59.

Yale (2-2) is coming off an impressive 4-1 victory over Stony Brook on Wednesday night. Jon Carlos scored twice, and Kevin Pope and Eric Meyer also had goals.

"Sacred Heart is an experienced team that proved last year that they are not to be taken lightly," Tompkins said. "After a difficult weekend, we made some progress against Stony Brook and will look to build on that in Saturday's game."

The Pioneers (1-4) dropped a 2-0 decision at Iona on Wednesday. Mario Mililli, Denis Brunotte and goalkeeper Matt Jones have scored Sacred Heart's goals this season. Jones's goal came on a penalty kick in overtime in a SHU's 2-1 win over Maine. Jones has been nominated for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. He has started every Sacred Heart game over the last three years and was a first team All-Northeast Conference selection last year.
