Two Bulldogs Reach Round of 16
HARTFORD, Conn. – Friday at the CSA Individual Championships in Hartford, Conn., Yale freshman Sam Fenwick defeated host team Trinity College's No. 1 player, Reinhold Hergeth. Fenwick was one of eight Elis competing in the tournament, and one of five competing in the top division.
Fenwick, who typically plays in the No. 5 position for the Bulldogs, defeated his opponent in four sets. With the win, he moved to the tournament's Round of 16, where he met Cornell's No. 1, Nicholas Sachvie. Unfortunately for Fenwick, that was the end of his run; Sachvie dealt him a 3-0 loss to propel himself to the quarterfinals. Fenwick finishes the season with a 12-3 record.
Elsewhere in the Pool Division, the tournament's top flight, Yale senior Kenneth Chan defeated Rochester's Adam Perkiomaki 3-2 but faced a similar fate as Fenwick, falling in the Round of 16 to another Rochester player, Andres Duany. Freshman Zachary Leman, junior Neil Martin and senior Richard Dodd also competed in the Pool Division but lost their first round matches.
In the Molloy Cup, the tournament's B Division, juniors Eric Caine and Charlie Wyatt both reached the second round, Caine by defeating Gray Riley (MIT) and Wyatt due to a bye. Caine went on to play Franklin & Marshall's Pedro Almeida but lost 3-0, while Wyatt faced Justin Singh (Drexel) but achieved the same result. Sophomore Joseph Roberts, the Bulldogs' other competitor in the Molloy Cup, left the tournament a little earlier, losing in the first round to Caleb Garza (Connecticut College).
While three Bulldogs earned wins today, by the end of the day all eight had been eliminated. The tournament's top two seeds, Todd Harrity of Princeton and Ali Farag of Harvard, both advanced and are on track for a rematch in the finals. Harrity dealt Farag his first collegiate loss in the semifinals of the CSA Team Championships last weekend. For more information from around the tournament, click here.
