No. 1 seed Lovejoy faces tough opponent
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Bulldogs are in New York this weekend to face No. 7 Columbia on Saturday and No. 14 Cornell on Sunday. Both matches are noon starts.
Since the 2010-2011 season, the Elis are 4-4 against Columbia and 9-1 against Cornell.
Columbia is 4-4 on the season, suffering loses only to No. 1 Harvard, No. 2 Trinity, No. 3 Rochester and No. 5 Dartmouth. Columbia's young squad has five first-years, four of whom are in the top nine.
Columbia's No. 1 seed, Senthilkumar Velavan, is 8-3 on the season and is No. 12 in the nation. Velalvan's individual ranking is higher than Yale's No. 1 seed Spencer Lovejoy, but Lovejoy nearly defeated several opponents that Velavan lost to, such as No. 2 in the nation Kush Kumar and No. 4 in the nation Ashley G. Davies
Columbia and Yale's No. 2 through 9 seeds all have nearly identical individual ratings.
Cornell is 3-8 on the season, coming off an upset win against No. 11 Navy. Cornell's young team has six first-years, two of which are in the top nine.
