Dec. 9, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four Bulldogs teams, including one composed of Eli alumni and Associate Head Coach Gareth Webber, competed in the U.S. Squash and Racquet Associations's U.S. Team Championships Friday and Saturday at the Brady Squash Center. In his return to the Brady Center, former Yale captain Julian Illingworth had an impressive two days, posting a 3-0 individual record.

The tournament's 27 teams include professional and college squads, and teams assembled from such places as New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York. Team Ketcham, which included Illingworth, Webber, as well as Yale alumni Terence Li, Joshua Schwartz and Chris Wyant, breezed through their match against the Princeton "B" squad Friday night, 4-1. Illingworth downed Santiago Imberton 3-1 (9-0, 4-9, 9-4, 9-4), Webber defeated David Canner 3-0 (9-6, 9-0, 9-0), Schwartz beat Brendan Bascom 3-0 (9-6, 9-6, 9-6), and Wyant downed James Thorman 3-1 (9-2, 9-7, 7-9, 9-4).

Saturday was witness to the marquee match-up of Illingworth and Princeton's Mauricio Sanchez, currently the USSRA's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked players under 25, respectively. Illingworth swapped his Yale blue for a white England jersey and his signature blue headgear for a cut white towel, but felt at home once again against the Princeton sophomore. After dropping the first game, Illingworth won the second 9-1 and the third 9-5. Down 6-4 in the fourth game, he won the last five points to take the game, 9-6, and the match.

Despite Illingworth's victory and Schwartz's five-game win over Preston Comey, the Ketcham team fell to Princeton "A," 3-2. In their second match on Saturday, the Elis pulled out a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia "B" team, highlighted by Illingworth's 3-1 win over Chris Callis and Schwartz's second five-game win of the day, as he came back to beat Matt Domenick after trailing 6-2 in the fifth.

Yale also featured three teams comprised of current Bulldogs. The Yale "A" squad of Nick Chirls, Max Samuel, Aaron Fuchs, Moshe Sarfaty and Todd Ruth kicked off the weekend with a 4-1 win over NYC "A" on Friday. Chirls downed Scott Kemp-Gee 3-1 (5-9, 9-6, 9-5, 9-4), Samuel nipped Carl Baglio 3-2 (6-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-2, 9-4), Fuchs thrashed Vishal Kapoor 3-0 (9-0, 9-2, 9-1), and Sarfaty beat Thao Roberts 3-0 (9-6, 9-4, 9-2) to lead the Elis. On Saturday, Yale fought hard against a tough Trinity squad, but ultimately fell 5-0.

Yale "B," composed of Ho Ming Chiu, Francis Johnson, Ethan Oetter, Colin Campbell and Bill Hatch, fell to Philadelphia "A" on Friday 4-1, despite a hard-fought 3-2 win by Hatch over Tod Harrity (9-7, 9-5, 0-9, 9-10, 9-2). The team rebounded to thrash the Greenwich team 5-0 on Saturday. Chiu beat Reed Endreser 3-2, Johnson downed Travis Judson 3-1, Oetter beat Robby Berner 3-1, Campbell nipped Clay Blackiston 3-2, and Hatch blasted Leighton Van Ness, 3-0.

The Yale "C" team of James Rector, Nate Beck, Chris Reid, Russell Feldman, Sharyar Aziz and Ahmed Khattak also had a successful first two days, posting a 3-1 overall record.
