NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale men's swimming and diving team picked up right where it left off prior to its month-long hiatus with a dominating 204.5-95.5 win over Ivy League rival Cornell Saturday. As the Bulldogs' second - and last - home meet of the season, it was senior day at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool. Thanks to strong performances from the four honorees and the Elis' impressive freshmen, those seniors celebrated with an emphatic win.
The day started with diving, and thanks to the performances of sophomore Tyler Pramer and junior Colton Staab, the Bulldogs picked up some early points to propel them into the afternoon's swimming events. Pramer (295.80) and Staab (292.95) finished second and third in the 1-meter event, a performance Pramer followed up with a victory in the 3-meter (311.33).
The swim events began just as promisingly, as freshmen Mike Lazris and Andrew Heymann teamed up with senior Goksu Bicer and sophomore Pat Killian to take first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.87). That was the first of three straight wins for Bulldogs, 12 in the day's 14 events.
The next came from freshman Josh Ginsborg, whose time of 9:29.70 bested the field in the 1000-yard freestyle. Just behind him was sophomore West Cuthbert, who swam the race in 9:46.48, good for second. Ginsborg's freestyling prowess was proven again in the 100-yard event, where he also grabbed a win (46.88), touching out Killian (47.27), who took second.
In keeping with the dominance this year's freshmen class displayed in the 2011 portion of the season, freshman Rob Harder also turned in multiple victories. His first came in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.54), and a second in the 500-yard freestyle, where he touched out junior Mike Dominski and sophomore Ed Becker, whose second and third-place finishes gave Yale the clean sweep.
Heymann made it a trio of Bulldog newcomers with multiple wins by dint of his victories in the 50-yard freestyle (21.02) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.93). Sophomore breaststroking standout Danny McDermott gave Yale a 1-2 finish in that event, taking second.
In addition to his two wins as part of Bulldog relay squads (the first in the day's first event - the 200 yard medley relay, and the second in its last - the 400-yard freestyle) Bicer celebrated senior day with a win in the 100-yard butterfly. He touched out freshman Alwin Firmansyah (2nd) and classmate Matt Boone (3rd) to give Yale yet another sweep of the top three spots.
The real tests for the Bulldogs begin next weekend when they take to the road to face off with Penn and Dartmouth, the last tuneup before the all-important H-Y-P meet.
