Men's Swimming and Diving Class of 2016 Ranked No. 25 in Nation

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's swimming and diving team will welcome eight new team members into the fold this year.  Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Coach of Men's Swimming and Diving Tim Wise, diving coach Chris Bergère, assistant coach Kevin Norman and senior captain Jared Lovett have seven swimmers and one diver joining them for the 2012-13 season, a freshman class that was ranked 25th in the nation and third in the Ivy League according to a CollegeSwimming.com ranking from this past summer.

"It is never easy to follow a legend [Frank Keefe], but Tim Wise has a done a great job so far," reads Yale's section of the CollegeSwimming.com ranking list.  "He had a solid group of freshmen this past season and has added a great group for next year."  Check out the full list of rankings here.

The Bulldogs had freshman Kevin Stang (along with sophomore Rob Harder) competing at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials over the summer, and four of the eight freshmen are high school All-Americans.  Here is a closer look a the Class of 2016:

 
 

Brian Clark

Sprint Freestyle/Butterfly

Hometown: Centervillle, Ohio          

High School: Centerville High School

Before Yale: Swam all four years of high school… Four-year varsity letter winner… Competed at the Ohio State Championships all four years… Team captain senior year… State meet finalist… All-American… Member of state champion 400 freestyle relay in 2012… National Merit Commended Scholar… Four-year member and two-year captain of Centerville's Science Olympiad Team.

Personal: Member of Ezra Stiles College… Plans to major in electrical engineering.

Why I Chose Yale: "I chose Yale because of its academic reputation and the sense of community throughout the school, especially on the swim team."

 

 

Jake Goldstein

Butterfly/Breaststroke/IM

Hometown: Huntington Bay, N.Y.

High School: Huntington High School

Before Yale: Swam for years on the varsity swim team at Huntington… Has been a club swimmer for 13 years… Earned All-League, All-State, All-Long Island, and All American Consideration titles in High School… Junior National Qualifier.

Personal: Member of Saybrook College… Plans to major in economics.

Why I Chose Yale: "Great Academics, Great Athletics."

 

 

Brian Hogan

Distance Freestyle/Backstroke

Hometown: Scarsdale, N.Y.

High School: Fordham Prep

Before Yale: Four-year varsity swimmer… Member of two state championship teams… Captain of the team senior year… Swam for Badger Swim Club under John Collins.

Personal: Member of Davenport College… Plans to major in economics and math… Both parents went to Georgetown… Oldest of four siblings.

Why I Chose Yale: "Yale gives me a chance to be a part of something bigger than myself both in and out of the pool."

 
 

Kendrick McDonald

Breaststroke/IM

Hometown: Columbia, Md.

High School: Loyola Blakefield High School

Before Yale: Swam and played water polo for four years in high school... Captain of the swim team senior year... Three-time All-American in swimming and All-Conference in water polo... Three-time MIAA champions in swimming... Individual MIAA champion in 100 breaststroke and 200 IM senior year... Two-time Academic All American... Swam for Loyola Blakefield Aquatics under Keith Schertle... Member of the National Honor Society.

Personal: Member of Silliman College... Considering a major in English... Son of Hank and Susan McDonald... Has one sister, Kellen.

Why I Chose Yale: "I was impressed by the academic opportunities and the potential for athletic success."

 
 

James McNelis

Diving

Hometown: Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.

High School: Grosse Pointe North High School

Before Yale: Four-year letterman for diving… Captain of the team junior and senior year… All-American in diving…  All-state in diving junior and senior year… Academic All-American… Academic All-State… Scholar-athlete all four years of high school… Went to USA Diving Nationals as a junior… Attended Michigan Diving Academy for three years… Played football as a freshman… Was on the JV tennis team… Member of the National Honor Society… NCTE Achievement Award in Writing… AP Scholar Award… U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete Award… Phi Beta Kappa.

Personal: Member of Pierson College…  Works as a lifeguard over the summer at a local yacht club… Coached the Grosse Pointe Girl's Diving Team during the school year… Enjoys snowboarding, water skiing, wakeboarding, hiking and travelling.

Why I Chose Yale: "I like everything about my visits to Yale, including the students, the team, the campus, the way the colleges are set up, the atmosphere, etc."

 
 

Kevin Stang

Backstroke/IM

Hometown: Highland Heights, Ohio

High School: University School

Before Yale: Swam all four years in high school… Earned four varsity letters… Team captain and MVP senior year… Holds six school and varsity records… Helped team to four consecutive State Championships… Three-time All American… USA Swimming Scholastic All-American… National and Olympic Trial qualifier.

Personal: Member of Berkeley College… Sister is a senior at Middlebury College

Why I Chose Yale: "I felt that Yale was a place I could grow both academically and athletically."

 
 

William Yang

Distance/Mid–Distance Freestyle

Hometown: Baltimore, Md.

High School: Centennial High School

Before Yale: Swam for Eagle Swim Team for seven years… Maryland Long Course Swimmer of the Year from 2007-2011… Earned a score of 5 on all 8 AP tests taken during sophomore and junior year.

Personal: Member of Jonathan Edwards College... Planning on doing pre-med and majoring in computer science.

Victor Zhang

Freestyle/IM

Hometown: Canton, Mich.

High School: Canton High School

Before Yale: Lettered four times in high school… Five-time All-American swimmer… Holds seven individual records and two relay records… Four-time MVP… Team captain senior year… 2011 state champion in 100 back... Junior nationals qualifier... Part of relay that took second place in the 400 free relay at Junior Nationals.

Personal: Member of Morse College… Plans on majoring either biology or economics… Enjoys playing guitar and basketball during spare time.

Why I Chose Yale: "Everything from the community on campus to the academic and athletic program was a perfect fit for me."
