NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Five incoming first years of the Yale men's swimming and diving team capped off their summer training with swims at long course summer championships meets across the nation.
Incoming first year Calvin Yang competed at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championship in Irvine, Calif., on July 25-29. Yang posted strong showings in the breaststroke events, placing 30th and 31st in the 50-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events, respectively. His swim in the 50-meter breaststroke was a personal best. Incoming first year Cristian Bell also traveled to Irvine to compete at the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships on July 31 to Aug. 4. Bell swam in the butterfly and backstroke events, finishing 42nd in the 200-meter backstroke and 63rd in the 200-meter butterfly with a personal best.
Several Bulldogs competed at the 2018 Futures Championships hosted across the nation on Aug. 2-5. At the Futures Championships in Rochester, Minn., incoming first year Felix Van Cauwelaert claimed 13th in the 200-meter individual medley and 23rd in the 200-meter freestyle.
Competing for rival club teams, incoming first years Michael Blank and Liam Bogart raced at the Futures Championship in Richmond, Va. Blank placed third in the 50-meter freestyle and helped his club team win the 400-meter freestyle and medley relays, anchoring the 400-meter medley relay. Bogart found success in a variety of events, notably winning the 400-meter individual medley and placing third in the 200-meter backstroke.
With the conclusion of the summer, the incoming Bulldogs will prepare to join up with the rest of the team in the fall for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
