Bulldogs to Face Brown at Home for Senior Day

Feb. 12, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldog men's swimming and diving team will close out the dual-meet season with a Senior Day meet against Brown on Sunday at the Robert J. H. Kiphuth Exhibition Swimming Pool. The team, which currently boasts a 5-4 dual meet record (3-3 Ivy League), will seek to finish off the regular season of competition with a win and cement its place in the upper portion of the Ivy League standings. The Bulldogs are currently tied for third with Cornell.

Last year, the Eli swimmers and divers picked up a big win over the Bears by a score of 178-122. This was not an anomaly, either. The Bulldogs have defeated the teams from Brown every year since 2001. Currently, the Bears are 1-5 in the Ivy League, picking up a win over only Dartmouth, which has not yet won an Ivy League meet this season. Most recently, Brown fell to Cornell 170-120, a team which the Bulldogs also lost to this season. However, the Bears fell to Columbia 186-112 earlier this season. The Bulldogs defeated the Lions 172-128 on Nov. 15, so the Yale swimmers should be prepared to take on the Bears.

Last year, the Bulldogs performed well against the Bears, winning 12 of the 16 events. The champion in every event except for three, the two diving events and the 200-yard individual medley, will be returning for the Bulldogs this year. Last year, senior captain Alex Righi led the way, winning his three individual events along with swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay. Seniors Matt Sweitzer and Chris Pool also had a great meet, with Sweitzer winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and Pool winning the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. As well, Sweitzer and Pool also swam legs on the 200-yard medley relay team. Junior Thomas Robinson won the 200-yard backstroke.

In the events that the Bulldogs lost last year, the team has a good chance of picking up wins this year. In the 500-yard freestyle event, sophomore Matt Lee took second last year, but the event winner from Brown, Peter Volosin, has graduated. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Lee was third last year with Volosin again winning. Lee had a great weekend last Saturday against UConn, winning both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events.

In those events hit by graduation, the Bulldogs still have a chance to perform well. In both the one- and three-meter diving events, the Bulldogs have three divers that have performed strongly this year, with each winning events in dual-meet situations. In the 200-yard individual medley relay, both junior Craig Steen and senior Dennen McCloskey have swum faster this year than the top Brown swimmer at the meet last year.

The Bulldogs also have a special incentive to do well in the meet. This is the last home meet of the year, and only the second scored meet of the year at home, for the senior class. The senior class has played a role in setting eight school records. The seniors on the team, Paolo Benvenuto, Ilya Byzov, Sebastian Cousins, Dan Li, Dennen McCloskey, Kyle McElroy, Chris Pool, Alex Righi, Tyler Scheid and Matt Sweitzer will be honored prior to the meet.

The meet will get underway at 3:00 p.m.
