Dorato Wins USTA/ITA Community Outreach Award
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Alex Dorato, the Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men’s Tennis, won the USTA/ITA Community Outreach Award for the New England region for his work with the New Haven Tennis Outreach Program.
Started in the fall of 2007, New Haven Tennis Outreach is a program where the Yale tennis coaching staff along with varsity tennis players tutor, mentor, and teach tennis to New Haven youths.
The program consists of four girls and six boys between the ages of 9 and 13. The ten kids come to the Yale every Monday for an hour of homework help followed by an hour of tennis instruction. During the summer, the kids receive a full scholarship to attend the Blue & White Championship Tennis Camps held at Yale for the month of July.
“The goal is to have the kids start the program at 8 to 10, and to keep them in the program through high school,” Dorato said. “So far our retention rate is 100%.”
The USTA/ITA Community Outreach Award “honors an ITA coach for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, community tennis associations, inner city, suburban or rural programs.”
Dorato is among ten coaches from ten different regions that received this distinction.
