NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Calvin Bennett, a rising senior from Sandy, Utah, was named captain for the Yale men's tennis team for the 2010-11 season. Bennett was elected by his teammates to succeed Connor Dawson as captain next year.
In his three seasons at Yale, Bennett has been a major contributor for the Bulldogs. As a freshman, Bennett played primarily at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. He led Yale in singles wins with 20 in his freshman season. As a sophomore, Bennett transitioned into fulltime duty at the No. 4 singles position and posted a 6-1 record in the Ivy League.
This season, Bennett played No. 3 singles for Yale and posted a 4-3 record in the Ivy League to help lead the Bulldogs to a 5-2 Ivy League record.
“I know Calvin will be a great captain for us next year,” said Alex Dorato, the Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men's Tennis. “He has tremendous leadership skills, and with his three years of experience in the starting lineup, he has all the tools to lead us to an Ivy League Title.”
Bennett will have help as well, as six of seven regulars for Yale will return next season including freshmen phenoms Marc Powers and John Huang, who played No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season, respectively. Also returning next season are junior Jordan Abergel, junior Ryan Berman, sophomore Erik Blumenkranz, sophomore Joel Samaha, and freshman Daniel Hoffman.
