New Haven, Conn. – The Bulldogs began the 2010-2011 season Friday at the Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
In the A draw of singles play, Yale sophomore Marc Powers defeated Princeton's Matt Siow 6-3, 6-3 and will next play Penn State's Jason Lee. Also in A draw play, sophomore Daniel Hoffman lost to Buffalo's Wotjek Starackiewicz 7-6 (2), 6-3.
In the B draw, junior Joel Samaha beat Columbia's Nathaniel Gery 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (5) and will play Cornell's Mirza Klis in the next round. Also in the B draw, junior Erik Blumencranz lost to Columbia's Kevin Kung 6-2, 6-3.
In the C draw, senior Ryan Berman lost to Princeton Dan Richardson 6-3, 6-1, while senior Jordan Abergel lost to Princeton's Ryan Kim 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. In D draw play, Penn's Lucas Andreika defeated freshman Patrick Chase 6-4, 6-4, and Penn's Dmitry Bury bested Yale freshman Zach Dean 7-5, 7-5.
In the E draw, freshman Tommy Ratchford lost to St. John's Matt Nejfeld 6-1, 6-2.
In A draw doubles play, Yale's Hoffman/Powers duo bested Binghamton's Devos/Rodrigues pair 8-2, while the Blumencranz/Samaha grouping lost a very close match to the FDU pairing of Shams/Skvarka 9-8 (10-8).
In B doubles, Abergel and freshman Kyle Dawson defeated Binghampton's Algier/Danielsson team 8-3, while the Berman/Chase group lost to Columbia's Deb Sen and Yetimoglu 9-7.
Match play continues Saturday with tournament and consolation games from Princeton's Lenz Tennis Center and Jadwin Gymnasium.
