Powers and Hoffman Still Alive in USTA Regionals
ITHACA, N.Y. - As the USTA Regional Tournament draws to a close on Tuesday, two Bulldogs remain in the draw: juniors Marc Powers and Daniel Hoffman. Powers will represent Yale in both singles and doubles. Powers won both of his matches in three-sets on Monday.
In the morning, Powers defeated Quoc-Daniel Nguyen (7-6(3); 2-6; 6-4). Next, Powers took on the Matija Pecotic, the No. 2 seed, whom he had never defeated before, and bested him as well (6-3; 3-6; 6-1). Powers will play No. 5 seeded St. John's Vasko Mladenov. When the two last met at the Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational three weeks ago, Mladenov edged out a win. In his past three years, Powers has always perfomed well at the Regional tournament: taking second place his freshman year and making it to the semifinals his sophomore year.
In doubles, Powers and Hoffman defeated Harvard twins Denis and Andy Nguyen.
