Powers Enters Spring Ranked No. 2 in Region
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The spring portion of the Yale men's tennis team's season begins this Sunday with the Bulldogs hosting a pair of local rivals, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac, at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The Bulldogs play the Pioneers at 11 a.m. and the Bobcats at 3:30 p.m.
Yale beat Sacred Heart 5-2 last season, including four wins in singles and a sweep in doubles. Junior Daniel Hoffman (Atherton, Calif.) won at No. 2, senior Joel Samaha (Tampa, Fla.) won at No. 3, senior captain Erik Blumenkranz (Portola Valley, Calif.) won at No. 4, and Calvin Bennett '11 won at No. 6.
The Bulldogs beat Quinnipiac 6-1 last season, losing only at No. 2 singles.
Junior Marc Powers (Stamford, Conn.) enters the spring as the No. 2-ranked player in the Northeast Region, trailing only St. John's Vasko Mladenov. Powers went 9-4 in singles this past fall, with Mladenov accounting for two of those losses – including one in the final of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship. Powers and Hoffman are also ranked No. 3 in doubles, following a 9-3 performance this past fall.
This will be Yale's first formal competition since last October's Connecticut State Championships, where Hoffman won the singles title and Samaha and junior John Huang (Irvine, Calif.) won doubles.
