Bulldogs Improve to 3-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-2 win at William & Mary Saturday morning. After taking the doubles point, the Bulldogs won four of six singles matches -- including the top three -- in straight sets.
This was Yale's first meeting with William & Mary (4-4) since 2003, a 4-3 Tribe win. W&M was playing its second straight Ivy League opponent, having fallen to Dartmouth 4-0 last weekend at the Tribe Kickoff.
The Tribe got a win at No. 2 doubles, but victories for Yale at the No. 1 doubles spot (juniors Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers, who are 11-3 as a team this year) and the No. 3 spot (junior John Huang and sophomore Patrick Chase) gave Yale the doubles point.
Yale's victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles came by the identically decisive scores of 6-0, 6-1 from Powers, the No. 70 player in the country), and Huang. Hoffman, ranked No. 108 in the country, added a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 and freshman Zachary Krumholz won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
Hoffman, Huang and Krumholz are all 3-0 now in singles.
Yale concludes its trip to Virginia with a match at Old Dominion Sunday morning.
