Huang, Krumholz Now 4-0 in Singles
NORFOLK, Va. – A 5-2 win at Old Dominion Sunday morning moved the Yale men's tennis team to 4-0 for the spring season, the Bulldogs' best start since 2001. After winning the doubles point 2-1, Yale got four wins in singles, including three in straight sets.
Wins at No. 1 doubles (from the team of juniors Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers) and No. 2 doubles (from the team of senior captain Erik Blumenkranz and junior John Huang) started the day off right for Yale. Hoffman and Powers are now 12-3 this year, while Blumenkranz and Huang teamed up for the first time. The Bulldogs had clinched the doubles point by winning those matches by the time ODU took the No. 3 match, 8-7 (7-5).
Straight-set singles wins by Blumenkranz (at No. 4) and freshman Zachary Krumholz (at No. 6), combined with an ODU win at the No. 3 spot, left Yale with a 3-1 lead as three matches remained on the court. Huang finished off a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the match -- the second straight year he has clinched a win over ODU, as he got the fourth point in last year's 4-3 Bulldog victory. Powers, ranked No. 70 in the country, followed with a three-set win over Krzysztof Muzalewski at No. 1.
ODU (2-4) got a win at No. 5 singles from Wesley Barrett, who edged senior Joel Samaha at No. 5, 6-7 (8-6), 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to make the final score 5-2.
Huang and Krumholz improved to 4-0 in singles this spring. Hoffman, who is ranked No. 108 in the country, suffered his first singles loss of the spring.
This is Yale's best start since the Bulldogs were 5-0 to start the 2001 spring season, en route to a 17-4 mark that year. They now have nearly two weeks off before competing in the ECAC Championships Feb. 17-19 at Dartmouth.
