Bulldogs Go 3-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team finished with a 3-0 record at the Army Tournament over the weekend, following up Saturday's 7-0 victory over St. Bonaventure by finishing off Binghamton 5-2 and then beating Army 7-0 on Sunday.
The match with Binghamton was split over two days, as the Bulldogs won four of six singles matches on Saturday. A 2-1 win in doubles on Sunday morning at Lichtenberg Tennis Center made the final score 5-2 Yale.
The Bulldogs then notched their second 7-0 sweep of the weekend, beating host Army Sunday afternoon. Yale won doubles 2-1 again, improving to 8-1 in doubles points in the last nine matches. The Bulldogs' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers went 3-0 for the weekend, outscoring their opponents 24-10. They are 11-2 overall. Yale also went 3-0 at No. 3 doubles behind sophomore Patrick Chase and junior John Huang, who have won seven of their last eight matches.
Yale (11-5) had four players go 3-0 in singles, including one (Huang) who did not drop a set all weekend. Hoffman, sophomore Kyle Dawson and freshman Zachary Krumholz were pushed to a third set just once each as they went 3-0. Dawson had to rally for a 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 5 vs. Binghamton.
Hoffman has now won nine in a row, and Sunday's 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 vs. Army's Alex Holland represented the first time since Feb. 19 that Hoffman had to play a third set. Krumholz is now 9-1, including seven straight wins when playing at the No. 6 spot.
Yale hosts St. John's Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., the Bulldogs' final non-league match of the regular season.
