Bulldogs to Host Northeastern Schools for USTA/ITA Regional Championships
Elis Look to Continue Winning Ways
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Nine members of the Yale men's tennis team will return to action on Friday and Saturday to take part in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships. The Bulldogs will be playing on familiar territory for the second event in a row, as Yale will host more than 100 players from schools in the Northeast for the six-day event.
The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships is an important event on the Elis' fall season calendar as the Bulldogs will be competing against many players they are likely to face again in the spring season and the Ivy League stretch. In addition, the singles and doubles main draw champions will earn spots in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. in November. As such, the Bulldogs will be looking to display the first-rate form that saw them go 41-3 at their last event, the Yale Shootout. By virtue of the Elis' dominant performance at the Shootout, several of Yale's players are on winning streaks in both singles and doubles.
Yale will feature six players in the singles main draw and three doubles teams in the doubles main draw of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. Leading the group of singles players is senior John Huang, whose strong season has earned him the No. 3 seed. Huang, ranked No. 113 in the nation, is on a three-match winning streak, having swept all of his singles matches at the Yale Shootout. Huang's classmate, Marc Powers, is also showing some good form of late, having gone 3-0 in singles at the Yale Shootout, losing no more than three games per match. Powers is seeded No. 7 in the draw. Rounding out the trio of seniors is No. 14 seeded captain Daniel Hoffman, ranked No. 114 in the country, who also eased through all of his matches at the Yale Shootout.
Joining this group of seniors in the main draw is freshman standout Jason Brown, who will be looking to extend his impressive 11-match winning streak. He is the only Yale player to have gone undefeated in singles so far this season. Freshman Martin Svenning is enjoying a solid start to his rookie season as well, and will look to make his mark this weekend. Sophomore Daniel Faierman is also in the singles main draw, and will look to regain the form that saw him make the final of his draw at the USTA Collegiate Invitational.
Yale is also fielding a strong doubles lineup for the USTA/ITA Regionals. Yale's top team of Hoffman and Powers, ranked No. 54 nationwide, is the No. 3 seed. This talented pair has put together a 5-1 record so far this season and will look to produce its winning formula against the other top doubles teams in the Northeast this weekend. Close behind is the No. 6 seeded team of Huang and junior Patrick Chase. This tandem is coming off an undefeated weekend at the Yale Shootout. Finally, senior Zachary Dean will team up with sophomore Matt Saiontz for the third time this season, the two having won both of their previous matches together.
In last year's tournament, Hoffman and Powers shined, with Powers making it to the final of the main singles draw and the two seniors teaming up to make the final of the doubles draw. Notably, Powers bested Princeton's Matija Pecotic in three sets en route to his final showing in the 2011 tournament. Pecotic is the No. 1 seed in this year's event. Powers also made the final of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional tournament in 2009 as a freshman.
Singles qualifying matches for this weekend's USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships begin on Thursday at 8 a.m. Since none of Yale's players are in the singles qualifying draw, the Bulldogs will not be in action until Friday, when the unseeded main draw players in both singles and doubles will play their opening round matches. The seeded players in singles and doubles will not play until Saturday.
