Bulldogs Pull Double Duty Against Fairfield and Sacred Heart

Yale Goes Undefeated in Eight Doubles Matches on the Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team displayed impressive form and fitness in its back-to-back wins over Fairfield and Sacred Heart on Sunday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.  The Elis picked up where they left off in their victorious season opener against Quinnipiac, as they first defeated Fairfield 9-0 and then overcame Sacred Heart by a score of 6-1.  Of the 22 individual matches played Sunday afternoon, Yale only surrendered one singles match to Sacred Heart.

For the second consecutive season, Yale (3-0) goes undefeated in its first weekend of official competition.  Playing at home for the second day in a row, the Bulldogs showed no signs of physical fatigue as they came out prepared to fend off their local rivals.  The Elis managed to get off to a great start, powering their way to no less than five doubles victories against Fairfield.  Yale's top senior pairing of captain Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers, the No. 19 team in the nation, led the way in the Bulldogs' doubles efforts, easing to an 8-2 win over Cameron Amyot and Ian Tesmond.  The Elis' No. 2 doubles tandem of junior Patrick Chase and senior John Huang also lived up to its billing by defeating Ofir Solomon and Dennis Zlobinsky, 8-3.  Yale's three other doubles wins over Fairfield opponents, including one by the freshman duo of Jason Brown and Martin Svenning, more than secured the doubles point.

Yale backed up its performance in doubles with eight straight-set singles triumphs against Fairfield.  Brown, Hoffman, Huang, Powers and Svenning all posted wins with minimal loss of games.  Sophomores Zachary Krumholz and Matt Saiontz and junior Tommy Ratchford also added wins.  Saiontz was particularly impressive in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Reece Breault.

The Bulldogs' considerable momentum from having won the first 22 singles and doubles matches of its season (nine against Quinnipiac, 13 against Fairfield) carried over to its match against Sacred Heart, which took place soon after completion of the Fairfield match.

Alex Dorato, Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men's Tennis, decided to mix up the line-up against Sacred Heart.  Chase and Huang, playing at the No. 1 doubles spot, showed why they can be relied upon to play in any position, as they rolled to an 8-4 win over James Barnhart and Jeremy Shuskus.  Saiontz and senior Zachary Dean, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated Brian Power and Mike Provenzano to improve their season record as a team to 6-1.  Brown and Svenning completed an undefeated day of doubles for the Elis with an 8-4 win over Luka Bagi and John Lopresti.

In singles, Brown, Dean, Hoffman, Krumholz and sophomore Daniel Faierman all contributed solid wins.  Dean defeated Kevin Budrawich 6-0, 6-0 to become the second Yale player to post a win without the loss of a single game so far this season, Saiontz in this feat.  The closest singles encounter of the day came between Chase and Matt Dean of Sacred Heart, with the latter eventually prevailing 6-2, 7-6 after narrowly winning a tight second set.

Fairfield (2-1) suffers its first loss of the season and will look to regroup in its match against Colgate on Friday.  Sacred Heart (1-2), meanwhile, will look to get its season back on track when it faces Boston College on Saturday.

The Bulldogs will look to maintain their near-perfect start to the season when they travel to Tennessee in two weeks' time to take on the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Middle Tennessee State University on Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, respectively.
