Bulldogs Extend Best Home Winning Streak in Team's Recent History

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team defeated Binghamton 5-2 on Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center to remain perfect at home.  The Elis recorded a pair of hard-fought wins in doubles before easing to four singles wins to secure the triumph, which comes just two weeks before the start of Ivy League play.

With the victory, No. 51 Yale (12-3, 0-0 Ivy) extends its unbeaten streak at home to seven matches.  This undefeated run is the best home winning streak in Yale's recent history, as it currently outpaces the 2009-10 team's five-match winning streak at home by two matches.

This win also saw the Bulldogs return to form in doubles play, as they clinched the doubles point for the first time since defeating Illinois State in the first match of their spring break trip to North Carolina.  The No. 1 senior duo of captain Daniel Hoffman and classmate Marc Powers, ranked No. 59 in the nation, posted an 8-6 win over Bastian Bornkessel and Ismael Dinia.  At No. 3 doubles, the pairing of senior Zachary Dean and Matt Saiontz contributed an 8-6 victory over Ruben Haggai and Robin Lesage.

The Elis succeeded in pressing their advantage in singles play, claiming three relatively straightforward wins to clinch the victory over Binghamton.  Senior John Huang led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Alexander Maisin.  Hoffman followed suit at No. 3 singles by rolling to victory over Lesage for the loss of only four games.  Freshman Martin Svenning did his part in a comfortable 6-4, 6-2 victory over Elliot Hureau.  At the No. 5 spot, Dean had the most dramatic win of the day for Yale, as he recovered from dropping the first set to record his third three-set win of the season and his fifth win in his last six matches.

The Elis return to their home courts Sunday to take on St. Bonaventure at 12:00 p.m.  This encounter marks Yale's final non-Ivy home match of the season.
