Freshmen Shine at Ivy Plus Invitational

Hagermoser and Lu Reach Semifinals; Brown, Dawson and Faierman Also Score Wins

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Unfazed by a weekend of mixed results at the Princeton-Farnsworth, the Yale men's tennis team performed well in front of a home crowd Friday at the inaugural Ivy Plus Invitational.  Five different members of the squad recorded singles victories, with two freshmen making impressive showings to earn semifinal berths.

Playing in the competitive 'B' draw, freshman Tyler Lu looked to be in his comfort zone on Yale's home courts, posting victories against two high-quality opponents.  In the first round, he defeated UNC Wilmington's Santtu Leskinnen 6-3, 6-4, and in his quarterfinal match, Lu beat St. John's Vaidik Munshaw by the same score.  In what is shaping up to be a potential breakout tournament for the Yale rookie, Lu is set to face Harvard's Alex Steinroder in the semifinals on Saturday.

One week after a sparkling collegiate debut at the Princeton-Farnsworth, freshman Alex Hagermoser continued his run of form on the first day of the Ivy Plus.  In a first round 'E' draw match that tested his mental and physical strength, Hagermoser ultimately came out the victor against Koen Wiggenmans of Old Dominion, 6-5, 4-6, 6-5.  He then followed up this hard-earned win with a more straightforward 6-3, 6-0 win against St. John's Federico Ruiz.  Hagermoser will play Dartmouth's Sam Todd for a spot in the final of the 'E' flight.

Captain Kyle Dawson, playing in the 'C' draw, also notched a first round victory against Army's Sam Lampman, winning 6-1, 6-4.  The senior was unable to pull out a second win on the day, however, as he dropped his quarterfinal match to Colin Sinclair of Cornell.

Sophomore Jason Brown and junior Daniel Faierman also won singles matches Friday, ensuring that at least one Yale player from each class recorded a singles victory on the opening day of the Ivy Plus.  Faierman won in main draw play, defeating Harvard's Henry Steer in a tough three-set battle, 6-5, 5-6, 6-3.  Brown, meanwhile, lost his first round match, but bounced back in consolation play to overcome Kyle Berman of Cornell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  In doing so, Brown became the third Bulldog on Friday to grind out a three-set victory, but the first to recover from a one-set deficit.

The Elis did not have as much success in doubles Friday, losing all five main draw matches they played.  Yale's doubles teams will have a chance to rebound Saturday in consolation play.

Saturday's doubles action begins at 9:00 a.m. at Yale's home courts.  Singles play will not begin before 1:00 p.m.

Yale's Friday results can be found below, and full updated draws from the Ivy Plus can be found here.
