Three-Set Singles Matches Make the Difference

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team played its first home match of the regular season Sunday against East Tennessee.  In a hard-fought encounter, the Bulldogs narrowly fell short on their return to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.  No. 68 East Tennessee picked up the doubles point and then edged by No. 58 Yale in singles with a pair of crucial three-set victories.  The final score was 5-2 in favor of the Buccaneers.

The match was competitive from the outset, with the battle for the doubles point coming down to the wire.  The two teams split the first two doubles matches.  At No. 1 doubles, Yale's top duo of freshman Tyler Lu and sophomore Martin Svenning notched a 6-4 victory against East Tennessee's pairing of Ismael Merino and Diego Nunez.  This was Lu's sixth consecutive win in doubles, with his streak dating back to the Connecticut State Championships in October.  At No. 2 doubles, David Biosca and Sebastien Yllera of East Tennessee defeated senior Patrick Chase and senior captain Kyle Dawson 6-3.  With the teams dead even, the match at the No. 3 spot became the decider of which team would have momentum heading into singles.  The Buccaneers prevailed with a tight 6-5 win over sophomore Jason Brown and freshman Alex Hagermoser.

The Elis suffered a hard blow with the loss of the doubles point, but as a testament to their resiliency, they did not allow the Buccaneers to race to victory in singles, and made them earn it.  Though Merino and Roger Ordeig recorded straight-set wins over junior Daniel Faierman and Hagermoser, respectively, Lu kept his team alive with 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Biosca at the No. 1 spot.  With the score locked at 3-1 in favor of the Buccaneers, the final three matches of the day were three-set affairs.  East Tennessee came out on top in two of them to clinch the win.  Dawson, however, finished strong in an impressive 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory over East Tennessee's Conner Huertas.

Yale will return to its home courts this coming Saturday for a doubleheader against Georgetown at 12:00 p.m. and Fairfield at 4:00 p.m.
