Different Year, Same Result: Yale Defeats Binghamton, 5-2

Bulldogs Secure Doubles Point, Win Four Singles Matches

WILMINGTON, N.C. – In a rematch of last year's encounter with Binghamton, the Yale men's tennis team produced a very similar result in a 5-2 victory on Friday over the game Bearcats.  This time around, the two teams met on a neutral site at UNC Wilmington's courts as part of the annual "Battle at the Beach".  After edging Binghamton in doubles play, the Elis were able to fend off a comeback by Binghamton in singles, clinching two crucial three-set wins.

To start the match, freshman Tyler Lu returned to his winning doubles form with an 8-5 victory, alongside sophomore Martin Svenning, over Binghamton's No. 1 duo of Alexander Maisin and Aswin Nambi.  While Yale's veteran No. 2 team of senior Patrick Chase and captain Kyle Dawson was on track to win its doubles match, it was the Bulldogs' No. 3 tandem that closed the deal first.  For the second straight match, junior Daniel Faierman and freshman Alex Hagermoser secured an 8-7 victory to seal the doubles point for the Elis.

In last year's match between Yale and Binghamton, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point and then went on to notch four singles wins.  The same pattern happened Friday, as the Elis backed up their superior play in doubles with some clutch play in singles.  At No. 2 singles, Svenning rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Maisin.  At the No. 4 spot, Faierman defeated Elliot Hureau 6-4, 6-3.  With losses at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, however, the Bulldogs split the four straight-set matches with the Bearcats, meaning that Yale would need to win at least one of the remaining two matches in order to hold off the Bearcat comeback.  The pressure was on the Bulldogs, as Lu had dropped the first set of his match at No. 1 singles and freshman Photos Photiades had dropped the second set of his match after winning the first.  Ultimately, both players showed impressive resilience by closing out their matches on a high note.  Lu took control of the decider and shut the door against Sidhartha Hazarika, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Photiades, meanwhile, wrestled away the final two games from his opponent, Ismael Dinia, to record a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 triumph.

The win moves Yale to 2-0 on neutral surfaces this season.  The Bulldogs will try to improve this record to 3-0 when they square off against No. 51 Central Florida on Saturday in their final "Battle at the Beach" match.  The action begins at 10:00 a.m. at UNC Wilmington's courts.
