Sou Wins in Straight Sets; D. Wang Wins Three-Set Battle on Final Day of Tournament

HANOVER, NH – After a positive first two days at the Dartmouth Invitational, several members of the Yale men's tennis team competed in Hanover on Sunday. Among these players, first-year Alan Sou and junior Dennis Wang submitted notable performances with a pair of victories in singles.

Sunday's action began with doubles. On the indoor courts, Yale's Nathan Brown and Andrew Heller faced a tough opponent in Brown's Mladen Mitak and Teddy van Eck, falling 8-3. Sou and Wang also fell by the same score outdoors against Dartmouth's Eddie Grabill and Gilbert Jaeger.

After a hard-fought round of doubles, the Elis moved on to singles play. Senior Fedor Andrienko and Brown finished first, suffering straight-set losses to Brown's Ching Lam and Binghamton's Valentin Bouchet, respectively. Yale's first-year Sou turned momentum around for the Bulldogs soon after, however, by posting a decisive 6-3, 6-4 victory over Binghamton's Inigo Saez. This impressive result capped off a strong weekend for Sou, who was one of just a few players in the field to win a singles match on all three days of the event; if he can carry such form over into the spring, he will make a strong case for a starting singles spot.

The highlight of the day for Yale came in Dennis Wang's singles match against Army's Gregory Shannon. After coming up short in a first-set tiebreak, Wang found himself without any room for error; the Bulldog responded masterfully, however, by taking the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 and closing out Sunday on a positive note.

After a full weekend of tennis, the Elis will return to New Haven with a number of positive takeaways, including the performance of players like Stefan Doehler, Heller, Sou and Wang. The Bulldogs may not have much time to reflect on this past weekend, however, as their next event – the ITA Northeast Regional Championships – begins in three days on Oct. 18.
