Bulldogs Hang Tough in Doubles, Fall to Princeton 4-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team hosted the opening day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships on Friday, taking on No. 4 seed Princeton in the event's first round. The two sides had last met during the 2017 Ivy League season, when the Tigers edged out a 4-3 victory. Although the Elis showed resilience across the board – especially in doubles – the opposition took advantage of a strong start and ultimately ran away with a 4-0 victory.

Friday's match began with a fiercely competitive round of doubles. With all three matches going down to the wire, it was Yale's Ryan Cheng and Dylan King who finished first, as they fell 6-4 to Princeton's Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman at No. 2 doubles. Fueled by this result, Princeton's No. 1 duo Luke Gamble and Damian Rodriguez then broke a 5-5 deadlock against Yale's Fedor Andrienko and Stefan Doehler to win 7-5 and earn Princeton the doubles point.

After escaping in doubles, Princeton quickly extended its lead in singles by notching straight-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. With a firm 3-0 match lead, Princeton's Davey Roberts then closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Yale's Nathan Brown at No. 6 singles. Although all other matches were cut short at that point, it should be noted that Yale's Andrew Heller was locked in a particularly tight match with Princeton's Seggerman at the top singles spot.

Considering the strength of their opposition, the Elis did well to push Princeton in both doubles and singles. Still, with their next match coming against Monmouth, the Bulldogs have little time to dwell on Friday's result; Yale's consolation round match will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
