Yale Thrashes Navy, 6-1
Feb. 25, 2006
ANNAPOLIS, MD - A meeting with the Midshipmen did nothing to sink the level of play of the men's tennis team today, as the Bulldogs rolled over Navy, 6-1. Yale won all three doubles matches, and at No. 4 singles, Rowan Reynolds pulled out a tiebreaker to win an extremely close match.
The Bulldogs easily won all three doubles matches to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. No. 1 Rowan Reynolds and Rory Green, No. 2 Brandon Wai and Josh Lederman, and No. 3 Milosz Gudzowski and Jeff Dawson all downed their Midshipman opponents 8-4.
"We won today, and we didn't play our best," Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato said. "I think that gives the team confidence that if we do play well, we can beat Maryland tomorrow."
In singles, Yale's top three seeds all won in straight sets. No. 1 Wai downed Nate Helms, 6-1, 7-5, No. 2 Gudzowski beat Jason Hill, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 3 Michael Caldwell defeated Adrian Lai, 6-3, 6-4.
After falling behind 1-0 after a 6-4 loss in the first set, Reynolds roared back in the No. 4 slot, winning the second set 7-5 and the third in a tiebreaker.
"He had a lot of opportunities to break serve in the first set, and never quite capitalized," Dorato said. "He still knew he was in control of the match. He just played a lot smarter in the second set."
At No. 5, Green thrashed Stanley Kahl, 6-1, 6-3 to round out Yale's wins. The Bulldogs will take on No. 75 Maryland tomorrow in College Park.
"I think [the team] is very confident that we'll beat Maryland tomorrow," Dorato said.
