LOS ANGELES, CA - The men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 match to Loyola Marymount today in Los Angeles to open up a week-and-a-half-long west coast swing. No. 1 Brandon Wai, No. 5 Rowan Reynolds and No. 6 Josh Lederman all came up with wins in excruciatingly close matches for Yale (4-3), but it wasn't enough to get past the Lions (4-6).
The Bulldogs, currently ranked No. 66 in the country, opened play with three close doubles matches. No. 2 Wai and Lederman downed Carlos Malet and Matt Phillips 8-6, but No. 3 Milosz Gudzowski and Jeff Dawson lost a hard-fought match to Michael Chan and Nicolas Terrien, 8-6, and No. 1 Reynolds and Rory Green dropped their match 8-3 to Michael Wojnarowicz and Linas Cicenas.
In singles, Wai, currently No. 55 in the nation, nipped Terrien 7-6, 7-6 to pick up a win in the No. 1 slot. No. 5 Reynolds got by Chan in a tough three-set match, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, and No. 6 Lederman took a close first set against Malet, 7-5, before blowing him away, 6-0, in the second set for Yale's third win. The Bulldogs, however, could get no closer, losing three other close singles matches.
"If the team can learn from this loss, it will definitely help us come Ivy League play," Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato said.
The Bulldogs continue their play out west on Fri., Mar. 10, when they tangle with UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m.
