Bulldogs Thrash Lions, 6-1
April 14, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale rolled over Columbia today, 6-1, as the Bulldogs took all six singles matches. After dropping a tough No. 1 doubles match, the Elis (9-7, 2-1) recovered to win their second straight league contest.
The beginning of the match began inauspiciously for the Elis, as they lost a heartbreaking doubles point. The Bulldogs and Lions had split the No. 2 and No. 3 contests, with No. 2 Brandon Wai and Michael Caldwell dropping their match to Scott Robbin and Paul Ratchford, 8-3, and No. 3 Milosz Gudzowski and Chris Lawler beating Jared Drucker and Dan Urban, 8-2. No. 1 Rowan Reynolds and Rory Green were up 5-2 against Jimmy and Marty Moore, but eventually lost, 8-6.
"We thought we were going to get the doubles point," said Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato. "[Rowan and Rory] just got a little tired, and made a few uncharacteristic errors. That's all it took--[Columbia] is one of the top teams in the league."
The Bulldogs came back with a vengeance in singles, however, as every player scored a two-set victory. Wai continued his impressive play at No. 1, defeating Jimmy Moore 6-2, 6-2, and No. 4 Caldwell won the closest match of the day, a 6-4, 7-6 decision over Ratchford.
"Everyone played really well--I think this match will definitely add to the players' confidence," Dorato said.
Yale will face off against Cornell tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. before traveling to Harvard on Fri., Apr. 21.
