Wai's Southern Road Trip Cut Short

Sept. 9, 2006

ATHENS, Ga. - Despite a resounding 6-1, 6-3 opening round victory in the University of Georgia's 39th Southern Intercollegiate Tournament, Yale captain Brandon Wai's southern road trip ended early Saturday morning. Wai, sidelined with a bad sore throat, was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

"It kind of started during the first match, and when he woke up this morning it had gotten much worse," Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato said.

Dorato noted, though, that despite Wai's withdrawal, he was the first player from above the Mason-Dixon line to play in the history of the tournament.

Wai will return south next weekend, as he heads to Charlottesville to play in a tournament hosted by the University of Virginia.
