NEW YORK, NY - Yale's top two players won in straight sets today, but it wasn't enough to beat the Columbia Lions in the second round of the ECAC Championships in New York. No. 1 Brandon Wai, currently ranked No. 50 in the country, and No. 2 Michael Caldwell won in straight sets, but the Bulldogs fell, 5-2.
Wai whipped Mark Clemente, 6-0, 6-0, and Caldwell downed Paul Ratchford 6-0, 6-4. Playing at No. 4, Rory Green lost a tough three-set match to Jared Drucker, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. No. 3 Jeff Dawson lost 6-3, 6-3 to Marty Moore, and his brother Connor fell to Justin Chow 6-2, 7-5 playing in the No. 6 slot. No. 5 Josh Lederman fought hard against Jonathan Wong, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 6-3.
Jeff Dawson and Lederman teamed for a close 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles over Chow and Drucker, but Yale dropped the other two matches to lose the doubles point. The No. 1 team of Wai and Green lost to Moore and Ratchford, 8-6, and No. 3 Chris Lawler and Caldwell lost to Clemente and Wong, 8-4.
